Greek Life Brings Campaign to Campus
Greek Life at UNCP continues to excel in their volunteer work and philanthropic duties. UNCP is home to 13 Greek Organizations and are continuing to grow. Over the summer David Sadler, an Alabama member of Phi Beta Sigma came up with an idea to start a campaign “Hugs Not Hurt.” The campaign consists of individuals blindfolding themselves and hugging other individuals no matter how they look, skin color or religious background. Behind the Numbers: Fatal Police Shootings
More than 700 people have been fatally shot by police this year. Last year a total of 990 people were fatally shot by police. According to The Washington Post, there have been seven fewer fatal shootings this year that at the same time last years. So far this month, 66 people have been shot. Families Enjoy Brave Carnival
Snow cones, music and inflatables were just a small part of the Brave Nation Carnival that kicked off Parents Weekend 2016 on Sept. 24. UNCP Honors Braves for Academic Success
To kick off Family Weekend, students and guests gathered in the Givens Performing Arts Center for the first annual Braves Scholar Awards Ceremony hosted by the Center for Student Success. The event was put together to recognize the academic accomplishments of current UNCP students. Of the 1300 scholars receiving recognition, about 300 attended the event Friday evening. Lights Go Out at Native Speaker Series
Even though the lights were out, the first Native American Speaker Series event still progressed on Sept. 20. Around 70 guests, including students, faculty, staff and community members gathered in the UC Annex to listen to speakers from Unlocking Silent Histories and to see displays from the Maya Tradition Foundation. On Saturday, international students took part in a trip to Fayetteville organized by the International Program. Sex Signals, a sexual assault awareness and prevention program, graced the stage of GPAC on Sept. 14. Plans in Motion for Homecoming
On Sept. 23, the UNCP Homecoming Planning Team met to finalize details for Homecoming Week. The festivities are scheduled to take place from Oct. 17-22. The week will kick off on Monday, Oct. 17, with UNCP Spirit Day. Students are encouraged to dress in UNCP gear on this day.
