Students Plunge in Water for Awareness

The Residence Hall Association of UNC-Pembroke raised more than $300 at the fourth annual “Polar Plunge” held on Jan. 27 at Courtyard Apartments.

Fifty-two plungers and nearly 100 spectators showed up for the “Polar Plunge” to raise awareness and money for Relay for Life. It was free for students to participate, but donations were welcome and Housing and Residence Life agreed to donate $5 for every plunger.

“This was the most successful year of Polar Plunge,” said Elizabeth Menzel, RHA Advisor and Community Director for Cypress Hall.

Different UNCP departments were also invited to take the plunge and help raise money. Michael Parnell, Aquatics Coordinator for Campus Recreation, raised the most money, Campus Recreation won a plaque and Housing and Residence Life also had two participants, Ed Wittenburg, Associate Director for Housing, and Jaquala Lyons, Community Director for North and Belk Halls.

Reddy Ice donated 9,000 pounds of ice to insure the pool would be ice cold for the courageous plungers.

“RHA put a lot of effort into making Polar Plunge a huge success, even doubling the number of plungers from last year,” said Tatiana Reed, president of RHA.      RHA hopes to continue increasing the number of participants and the amount of money raised every year.
