After already taking a loss to Armstrong State a week earlier, the UNCP women’s basketball team bounced back to beat the same team 79-60 on their home court in Savannah, Ga., on Feb. 20.

Once again for the Lady Braves, Mary Robinson and Jonissa Monley, led the team to the victory over their PBC foe.

Robinson and Monley were each sensational in the points and rebounds category as they each recorded a double-double.

Robinson lead all Lady Braves in points with 23 off of a 6-8 shooting performance including the 4-4 shooting performance from the three point line.

Along with her scoring, Robinson grabbed 10 rebounds, two steals, two blocks and one assist.

Monley contributed to 20 points also for the Lady Braves and she was tenacious on the boards allowing her to grab 15.

Robinson got the Black and Gold off to an extremely fast start by hitting a three pointer and a layup in the opening moments of the contest.

The Pirates answered though and took the advantage with a 9-6 lead in the first quarter with 6:14 remaining.

To end the first quarter each team struck back and forth until time ran out with the teams all knotted up at 17-17.

Similar to the first quarter of the game, the second was tightly contested with each team trading blows.

With the score tied at 25-25 with 1:33 remaining in the second quarter, freshman sensation Avery Locklear hit a three pointer to stretch the lead out to three.

UNCP was able to add one free throw and went into half with the 29-25 lead over the Pirates.

Early into the third quarter of play, the teams were in a tight contest again.

However, UNCP finally broke free from their competition and went on a 7-0 run to end the third quarter with a 51-44 lead.

The fourth quarter of play was all UNCP, as the Lady Braves took control of the quarter early and never looked back.

Led by Robinson, Monley, Locklear and along with Jasmine Huntley the Lady Braves dominated the Pirates 79-60.

Huntley ended up being the third highest scorer for the Black and Gold with 13 points along with three assists.

Locklear poured in nine points to go with her three assists and three rebounds.

A major component in the victory over the Pirates was the efficency from the Lady Braves offense.

They shot an outstanding 53.1 percent from the floor while outrebounding the Pirates 40-34.

The defense also contributed by only allowing Armstrong State to shoot 33.9 percent.
