Campus Raises Over $11,000 for Relay for Life

Students raised over $11,000 towards Relay for Life on April 15-16. Different student organizations did a variety of fundraisers throughout the day to support the cause. Some of the fundraisers included a hot dog sale and soul food plate sale.

Relay for life is a fundraiser that ultimately strives to raise money for cancer, and celebrate survivors of cancer.

Special Laps

During Relay for Life there are many different events such as the Survivors Lap, Luminaria Ceremony, the Fight Back Ceremony, and the Caregiver Lap.

The Survivors Lap is dedicated to the survivors of cancer. This is an important part of Relay for Life because it celebrates survivors and their success at beating cancer.

The Luminaria Ceremony is the part of Relay for life where family, friends and loved ones remember the lives lost to cancer.  When it gets dark candles are put inside of bags and placed around the track for remembrance of lost ones.

The Fight Back Ceremony is meant to inspire people to fight cancer in any way they can and helps them learn new ways to do so. This part of the ceremony is especially emotional and inspiring because it promotes hope.

The Caregiver Lap is meant to recognize the people who are giving care and fighting alongside cancer patients.

Relay for life started with one man who ran for 24 hours to raise money for cancer. Since then many people have joined in, in the fight against cancer in this same way.
