STOMP Rocks GPAC
Brooms, trash cans, matchboxes, lighters, newspapers and other items created beats that got the audience moving. STOMP is a musical group that creates musical genius through unconventional items combined with dance moves and creative comedy routines.
The Givens Performing Arts Center was nearly packed, with 1,158 tickets sold. The energy of the cast cascaded out to the audience. Some musical numbers left audience members laughing while other acts had people cheering. This musical group left the audience amazed at the skill level the cast members had in their performance.
People whooped. People wowed. Some even yelled out “oh my God” at some of the imaginative theatrics. The audience members were even part of the show when certain cast members clapped, giving unspoken instructions for the audience to try to follow along.
As the routine progressed, the clapping, snapping and stomping got more complicated and the audience couldn’t keep up, at one point leaving the cast member with a disappointed look that made audience members laugh.
“It was really fun,” Emily Thompson, freshman, said about being part of the show.
“It seems like a great way to get exercise,” another audience member said.
The cast gave a performance that was well tuned. They maintained energy throughout the show.
According to the STOMP handbill handed out before the show, STOMP was created in Brighton, UK in 1991 by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas.
“STOMP began its run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York in February 1994 and quickly went on to win both an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for Most Unique Theatre Experience. By the summer of 1994, the first American cast was in place at the Orpheum, freeing the original cast for sell-out tours of North America and Japan.”

GPAC will be hosting The U.S. Air Force Band Monday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. On April 7, Tony award winning play Pippin will be performed in GPAC at 8 p.m.
