Join the Glow Run, Race to Homecoming

The Department of Health and Human Performance is putting on a Glow Run on Oct. 27. The Glow Run will include two races, the 8th annual “Leave it to Beaver 5K” and a one-mile fun run/walk.

Both races will begin and end at Grace P. Johnson Stadium and will wind through UNCP’s campus. Participants are urged to compete in their best glowing racing attire.

“The Glow Run is fun,” Dr. Marian Wooten, assistant professor/recreation management coordinator at HHP, said.

“We don’t emphasize competition too heavily because we want people to come out and get some exercise.”

All participants receive a prize. Top male and female finishers of both races will be awarded, and a prize will be given out for the best glowing costumes in each race. All 5K participants will be entered in a post-race raffle featuring prizes from area businesses.

Participants can choose from three pricing options: $7 pays for the registration and a glow necklace, $10 purchases the t-shirt and by paying $15, participants can register and receive both the blow necklace and t-shirt.

As part of UNCP’s Homecoming celebrations, all proceeds of the Glow Run will support HHP department scholarships, including the Dr. Mary Guy Beaver Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. Tommy Thompson Sport Management Scholarship – UNCP’s only scholarships supported entirely by student fundraising efforts, according to HHP.

Students help staff and organize the Glow Run, as well as help fundraising through going out in the community to collect donations.

Check-in for the Glow Run begins at 5 p.m., the one-mile fun run/walk and 5K walkers take off at 5:45 p.m., and the 5K runners-race commences at 6:05 p.m., with awards and raffle immediately following the individual races.

The one-mile fun run/walk is open to participants who are 5-years-old and older. The 5K is open to register for those 14-years-old and older.

To register, applicants must submit their fees and release statement (which can be obtained by contacting Dr. Wooten at marian.wooten@uncp.edu) to the Jones Building, in person to room 1187 or by mail to Dr. Wooten’s PO Box address (Attn: Glow Run, Box 1510, One University Dr., Pembroke, NC 28372).
