Board of Governors Visit UNCP

The new members of the UNC Board of Governors toured UNC Pembroke’s campus Oct. 23 in a statewide effort to view all 17 universities in the UNC system.

Controlling policy decisions, such as budgets for the universities, the Board of Governors is the main body in deciding “the general determination, control, supervision, management and governance” of all 17 universities in the UNC system, according to WRAL.

Embracing the university’s Native American heritage, the meeting started off with remarks from the cultural coordinator and the Lumbee Tribe cultural team welcoming the new board members with cultural native dances.

Chancellor Robin Cummings greeted the board afterwards.

“I understand that you’ve been greeted at other campuses by marching bands, mascots, cheerleaders and even a little purple haze, but what you just experienced I believe you will not find any place else,” Chancellor Cummings said.

Refreshments were provided as the university exhibited select departments to the new members. Community Civic Engagement, Student Government Association, Maynor’s Honors College, Center for Student Success, Athletic Department, Pathway to Success, Military and Veteran’s Outreach and Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity Center were the departments chosen to represent the university’s success.

The 12 new board members began the afternoon exhibiting the departments and programs offered on campus [unknown to many on campus] and it’s leaders to grasp how each program and department is designed to uniquely cater to the students of UNCP.

Afterwards, the board members toured UNCP’s nursing simulators lab in the Health Science Building and visited the Museum of the Southeast American Indian in Old main, according to University Communications.

Visits to the nursing simulators come about during the possibility of the university receiving a new school of Health and Sciences.

The nursing simulation lab is equipped to deal with various situations such as maternity/child care, home care and mental health assessments.
