Library Room Named After Charlie Rose Faces Confusion
The Mary Livermore Library “Charlie Rose Collection” has faced recent confusion on campus amid allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Charlie Rose, the career news host and interviewer seen on CBS, PBS and Bloomberg.
However, the Charlie Rose room at Pembroke is named after a completely different man by the same name. The room is home to hundreds of legislative files, books and photos formed as a collection and named after Charles Grandison Rose who served as the Democratic congressman representing the 7th district of North Carolina.
“Representative Rose was very supportive of the Lumbee Indians of Robeson County as was demonstrated by the many relevant documents in his files,” according to the UNCP website on the Charlie Rose room.
The room and its contents are symbolic of the work that Charles Grandison Rose did for the 7th district of North Carolina and his support of the Lumbee Indians as a Congressman for four years.
Charles G. Rose III was born August 10, 1939 and died September 3, 2012.
The mixup was highlighted when former CBS news anchor Charlie Rose was accused of sexual assault and harassment by eight women last month.
The women claim that Rose harassed them and made “unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, or groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas,” according to The Washington Post.
Since then, the news anchor has been fired from CBS. PBS has pulled his shows from broadcast.
Charlie Rose, the newsman, has seen his honorary degrees awarded by a number of schools rescinded after the allegations, including the journalism schools of Arizona State and University of Kansas, according to the New York Times.
Rose has received an honorary degree from UNCP, as well. It was awarded in 2000. It has not been rescinded.
The congressman also received an honorary degree from Pembroke in 2002.
