• A 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the gulf of Alaska on Jan. 23 early in the morning. There were no casualties reported, but the aftershock created a change in water levels all the way down in Florida.

 

• The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles won their division playoff games and will be advancing to the 52nd Super Bowl, which is to be held on Feb. 4 at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

 

• A finalization in the decision of relocating the American embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel has been reached to move to Jerusalem. The embassy will be opened and functioning at the end of 2019.

 

• Four robbers who were involved with the Lumberton PNC bank robbery on Jan. 23 have been arrested. A high speed chase ensued and gunshots were exchanged before making successful arrests. Police say there is a potential fifth party involved as the investigation continues.

 

• Chinese scientists have achieved another breakthrough in cloning, this time the experiments resulted in a potential step closer to human cloning. Using the similar algorithm used for the Dolly the sheep clone, the scientists cloned monkeys successfully.

 

• Larry Nassar, the former American Olympic gymnastics doctor has been sentenced to 175 years in prison after more than 140 victims appeared in court to testify against him.

 

• The First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, has spent more than $675,000 in taxpayer money for travel expenses throughout a three month period for her military flights to and from her home in New York and the White House.
