As N.C. Promise approaches, campus recreation is taking steps to accommodate higher numbers of students by planning to upgrade and expand fitness facilities.
According to Justin Winans, director of campus recreation, “We are exploring several prospective enhancements for Campus Recreation here at UNCP, intentionally driven to upgrade the experience of our current students and patrons, as well as to prepare us for the uptick of population not just next year, but for years to come.”
FIT ground outdoor exercise facility
Plans to prevent gym overcrowding are in order.
“We are in the initial process of bringing a (FIT Ground) outdoor exercise facility onto campus to help mitigate the possibility of overpopulation in the Wellness Center,” Winans said. “With national trends pointing to nonconventional exercise and wellness, this facility will provide ample opportunities for students to maintain their physical wellness while matriculating here.”
“We are in the process of negotiating a lease agreement to replace all of our aerobic fitness equipment,” Winans said. “This lease will provide us the ability to bring equipment of a higher quality and interactivity to the Wellness Center.”
Winans hopes that the new equipment will help the space become more “modern” and “engaging” for students.

Additionally, the Wellness Center will undergo cosmetic changes such as new flooring and increased locker availabilities for students, he said.
Hours of operation to be determined
“As for the extension of operational hours, that will be explored as we determine participation trends and equipment hours of use information once students arrive,” Winans said.
Winans sees N.C. Promise as an opportunity to grow and “enhance” campus recreation programs and is working to provide these opportunities for both current and prospective students.
