The UNCP Women’s Basketball team took on the Lakers of Clayton State University in their final road contest of the regular season. The game was held on Feb. 17 in the Athletics & Fitness Center in Morrow, Ga.
The Lady Braves came into the contest clinging on the eighth and final seed of the Peach Belt Conference postseason tournament. The team hadn’t won a road game against the Lakers since the 2005- 2006 season.
This 53-47 triumph over Clayton State marked just the second time this season that the Lady Braves managed to record back-to-back victories. The Lakers held a 16-11 lead early in the second period before the Black and Gold went on an incredible 25-2 run.
This continued into the opening minutes of the third quarter to establish a 36-18 lead. Clayton State would go on to reduce the deficit to just 10 points at the end of the third and then down to just single digits in the fourth period. Sophomore Tee Graham put the game away for good by going 4-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of play.
This stifling defensive outing by the Braves marked the third time in their last four contests in which they held an opposing team to a season low-point total. The Lady Braves shot a season best 24.3 percent from the field.
Senior Nyla Allen not only led the Black and Gold in scoring with a game-high 20 points, she also reached the 20-point threshold for the sixth time this season. This game also marked Allen’s 20th consecutive contest in which she recorded double digit points.
The impressive record dates back to the team’s Dec. 10 tilt against Lenoir Rhyne. Sophomore Aliyah Farmer recorded her second double-double of the season by putting up 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to lead the team.
Graham managed to record a career best in rebounds as her 10 were good enough for second on the team.
