CAPS Conducts RAD Classes

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is conducting a women’s self defense class called Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) in order to equip students with the skills necessary to defend themselves in the face of danger.

According to lead instructor Evelyn Cheek, “The Rape Aggression Defense system’s instructional objective is: to develop and enhance the options of self-defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.”

R.A.D. techniques consist of strategies such as blocking, striking and the use of offensive and defensive postures.

“The mission of the R.A.D. Systems is to establish an accessible, constantly improving and internationally respected alliance of dedicated Instructors...In doing this, we challenge society to evolve into an existence where violence is not an acceptable part of daily life,” as stated on www. rad-systems.com.

As stated on CAPS’s website, “The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.”

“It’s a six week group,” said LynnDee Horne, director of CAPS and lead instructor of R.A.D. Classes are held on the second floor of the Student Health Services building on Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. Horne said.

R.A.D. classes began Feb. 15. Each R.A.D. instructor is nationally certified to give students the best instruction possible. Martial arts are not included in R.A.D. classes. In addition to R.A.D. classes, CAPS and Campus Police have teamed up to form the Sexual Misconduct Advocacy and Resource Team (SMART).

This team is devoted to educating and helping students work through sexual assault, domestic and sexual violence. For more information regarding R.A.D. and SMART, visit www. studentaffairs.uncp.edu or call (910) 521-6202.
