Omega Psi Phi Brotherhood Present Love Advice

Brotherhood Omega Psi Phi took a different approach during this love season. The fraternity hosted a love advice forum in the UC Lounge on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.

The purpose was to assist in growth within healthy relationships. Students asked anonymous questions a few minutes before the event took place. A panel answered the questions later in the evening. The panel included members of the fraternity, Omega Psi Phi’s pageant contestants and a counselor from Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

After the panel answered the questions, the floor was opened for attendees to give their advice to students as well. Some of the most commonly asked questions focused on lack of satisfaction in relationships.

Miss Omega Psi Phi’s Alexis Clinton was on the panel and mentioned an important tip.

“Every response that was given in regards to a question boiled down to the simple fact, that we all need communication with one another,” Clinton said.

Communication

Despite what someone may go through in a relationship, sticky situations can be avoided or fixed. Developing a strong sense of communication with your partner is one way.

Clinton also received clarity about a previous relationship, after hearing students agree with the importance of communication. Students are afraid to seek help, according to Clinton.

“Not enough people are willing to gain an outside perspective on their situation,” she said. “So many students are afraid to communicate that with a counselor, let alone the person involved and this generation needs to find comfort in talking about their problems instead of suppressing them.”

Mistrust

Students often found common ground on controversial topics such as cheating, trust and respect within a relationship. Attendees like Major Hart, made realizations through some advice about cheating while in a relationship.

“I don’t think everything is my fault if someone cheats on me,” Hart said. Hart found the open floor resourceful. “It was helpful to see different people’s opinion,” Hart said. He also agreed that most of the advice could be applied to his current and future relationships.

The love advice forum gave students an opportunity to receive information, apply it to their relationships and mentally prepare for future connections down the line. Being in love is generally a beautiful feeling, but without the proper knowledge about the topic, students could end up in an unhealthy relationship.
