Valerie Odugba Wins Pageant at African Night

The African Student Organization hosted African Night in Moore Hall, with a Pageant sponsored by the SGA.

Blessed to Impress was the emcee for the night. Doors opened at 6:30 p.m. and the event started at 7 p.m. It was a full house with people from on and off campus. One of the contestant’s mother was in the audience that night.

“You can feel a mother’s love from across the country,” Blessed to Impress said. “Thank you for coming tonight to support your daughter.”

Blessed to Impress danced his way on stage and introduced himself to the audience. Then he introduced the judges: Deion Perry, Arieona Edley and Alexis Clinton. The night began with a performance by Asa Nwa Dancers.

Omega Psi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma came to the event stepping, each ending with their fraternity’s hand sign.

“That’s how they hop in your DMs,” Blessed to Impress said.

Aniya King presented the audience with a song. The pageant began after the performances. The host, with help from an ASO member, read questions for the two constants, Valerie Odugba and Charmaine Hativagone.

For the talent competition, Odugba sang Sandcastles by Beyoncé and Hativagone recited a poem with a dance and an instrument. Blessed to Impress introduced the African Night’s annual fashion show.

Cynthia Bolden did a spoken word and Millbrook High School did a dance performance. Vocal Harmony also sang two songs. Afterward, the Photo by Octavia Johnson

judges regrouped to determine the winner.

Blessed to Impressed announced the winner, Odugba, as 2018 Miss AOS.

“It was actually shocking, it really was,” Odugba said. “Looking at my competition, it was like, I didn’t think I got it, but I pulled through. I’m really ecstatic.”

ASO came out to thank Brother 2 Brother, SGA and the director of ASO, Dr. Robert Canida for helping them with the event. They ended the event with dancing and the audience joined in.
