Remembering Dr. Steven Bourquin

Dr. Steven Bourquin, chair of the university’s department of Mathematics and Computer Science, died unexpectedly in Pembroke, NC, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018.
Bourquin was a first-generation college student upon entry to his alma mater, Ohio University, where he would graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Master of Science in mathematics and Doctor of Philosophy in administration in higher education.
One of his greatest joys was working with first generation college students in his department and helping them realize their potential.
Bourquin embodied the precepts of the university in how he related to students, always extending respect and accessibility to them through his “open door policy.” In addition, he made it his mission to make education fun and to “ease math anxiety” among his students.
Bourquin is the two-time recipient of the UNCP Outstanding Teaching Award in the department of Mathematics and Computer Science, where he has served as chair of the department since 2007, and member since 2003. Additionally, he was the UNCP recipient of the UNC system’s Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016.
A memorial service was held on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 4:00 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc. in Lumberton where the family received friends following the service. His friends and colleagues will hold a Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 22, 2018, from 2:00-4:00 PM at UNC-Pembroke.
