Lumbee Tribe Accepts $3.6M Education Grant, Plans to Boost Project 3C
On Friday, Oct. 5, a press conference was held at the Pembroke Boys and Girls Club as the Lumbee Tribe of NC received the first installment of a $3.6 million grant from the federal government.
The grant will be used in efforts to promote initiatives for American Indian students to grow and excel academically.
As stated by a press release made by the Lumbee Tribe, “This grant will provide American Indian Students with experiences and skills necessary to: develop their self-efficacy; increase congruence between their interests and career choices; and, broaden their college and career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, education, and mathematics).”
One way the tribe hopes to make this possible is through Project 3C.
Project 3C is the collaborative effort of Robeson Community College, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and the Public Schools of Robeson County as they join the Lumbee Tribe in instilling the importance of civic engagement, community ties and STEM careers in American Indian Students.
According to the Robesonian, “The project is designed to guide students in middle school and high school toward careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering and math, and the project partners will be asked to improve college preparedness of American Indian youth and tribal community engagement in the Lumbee Tribal Service Area.”
Initiatives such as educational programs and community engagement opportunities will be put into place to make this possible.
As stated by the Robesonian, “The money already received will be used to hire project staff and to fund projects in the current fiscal year, which started Monday.”
