Office of International Programs Undergoes Name Change, Becomes Office of Global Engagement

In an effort to attract international students and globalize UNCP, the Office for International Programs Office changed its name to the Office of Global Engagement.

The International Programs Office at UNCP plays multiple roles.

It is responsible for handling and processing applications from regular and international exchange students.

The office is also responsible to arrange workshops and presentations to familiarize the foreign students with

the US environment at UNCP.

According to Alex Brandt, the Interim Director and study abroad coordinator, they have changed the name from International Programs Office to the Office of Global Engagement as part of the initiative to globalize campus.

The word “global” is also more up-to-date and inclusive as compared to the word “international,” he further added.

The initiative doesn’t just include international students coming from other parts of the world, but IP is also working to involve local American students with their global initiatives.

“Local students can get involved in study abroad, they can also get involved practicing English with our international students,” Brandt said.

Not only the name, but the current structure and functions of the office have changed from its previous structure as well.

Brandt said, “We are planning to hire an Assistant Director of Admissions. This person will work on processing applications from international students and potentially recruiting international students.”

The newly appointed position of the assistant director of admissions will work under the Office of Global Engagement and report to the undergraduate and graduate school.

“The position will report to multiple departments to recruit and process more

international application,” Brandt said.

According to uncp.edu, “Our Vision is to prepare our students for the complexity of a changing world by fostering crosscultural competence and encouraging global citizenship. We accomplish this vision through tailoring individualized experiences beginning at the campus, extending to the region, and connecting to the international community.”

The office is located at 902 Dogwood Lane.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
