On October 24th, the AAUW (American Association of University Women) hosted a #Selfie Event in the UC Lounge. The #Selfie Event was an effort to empower students to cultivate a positive self-image. The event was a fun time for all students, especially the female students who came out to decorate their own picture frames.
AAUW supplied students with crafts material to decorate and customize their personal frames. This event gave students the opportunity to stop and visualize themselves.
It also gave them the chance to take whatever they were feeling and be able to express it on a picture frame that they would later be able to place their own image in.
Additionally, the event provided time for students to take a break from their work and studies and to reflect on themselves.
AAUW set up several frames on each table, for any student that was willing to participate.
AAUW’s purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. They empower female students to rise above any setbacks and be a better person, for themselves and the society.
The chapter’s President Ranada Johnson of UNCP stated that, “This event is giving students the opportunity to express themselves through art.”
When students finished creating their personalized picture frames, they were able to take a picture with the huge picture frame AAUW had set up towards the front of the event. In addition, AAUW offered to print those pictures out for students to keep.
AAUW Vice President Sadira Bacchus said, “Hopefully students encourage one another to love themselves and embrace their own differences.”
Any female students interested in joining AAUW must be currently enrolled at UNCP, have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, and have good student conduct with no infractions with the Office of Student Conduct.
