Women’s Basketball Upset No.10 Night Hawks 53-44
The UNCP women’s basketball team brought their four-game losing streak to a halt when they turned in an incredible fourth quarter rally to complete the 53-44 victory. The University of North Georgia Night Hawks were handed their first conference loss and just second setback of the season.
The Braves were able to put the clamps on the Night Hawks and limit them to their worst offensive output in nearly a decade. This upset marked the first victory for the Braves over a top-10 opponent in program history and their first victory over a nationally ranked opponent in two years since they defeated the Night Hawks previously 77-66 on Jan.16, 2017.
Coming into the final period of play the Black and Gold trailed by nearly 10 points but chipped away at the deficit to keep it within a single digit margin until they went on a scoring 13-0 run to secure the comeback win and stun the Night Hawks.
“In the fourth quarter we started executing offense and then just making shots so that makes a difference,” said Head Coach John Haskins.
Redshirt Junior Tee Graham led the team and churned out a game-high of 14 points, hauled in five rebounds and was credited with four assists. Senior Avery Locklear and junior Aliyah Farmer both fell just shy of a double-double.
Farmer came in second for the Braves in both scoring and rebounds with 10 points and seven boards. Locklear led the team in rebounds with a game-high of eight boards and scored nine points.
“Belief and confidence… Believing in yourself, believing in your teammates, believing in what you do and just having confidence in your abilities. We talk to them everyday about that; just have confidence in your abilities that you’re good enough to play with and beat any team in this league,” said Haskins.
