Softball Hits Their Way to a Sweep of USC Aiken in Twinbill

The UNCP softball team used a sensational day at-bat to sweep the USC Aiken Pacers in a doubleheader at the J.H. Satcher Field on Mar.30. The Braves totaled 24 hits on the day through both games that included eight extra-base hits. They won the first game 7-2 and secured the sweep in game two with an 11-6 victory. The outing marked the first sweep of a conference opponent by the Braves this season and extended their winning streak to four straight games. Game 1: A standup double down the left field line from Rendi Wetherington got things started in the top of the opening frame and an RBI single from Mary Sells brought Wetherington home for the first score of the game. Alex Watkins churned out a single of her own to bring in Sells and give the Black and Gold a 2-0 lead. A fielding error would lead to the Pacers’ first of their two runs on the day. The Braves’ bats would stay hot in the second inning when Wetherington hit a two-run homer to increase their lead to 4-1. UNCP would record a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings and would log their final pair of runs in the sixth after a two-run double to left center field from Sells brought in Wetherington and Kaitlynn Norton. Game 2: After a scoreless first inning, the Braves would go on to score in each of the next four innings including three straight frames that featured multiple runs. Jordan Adcox would record the first score of the game with a home run over left field. The Braves would score four runs in both the third and fourth innings to give them all the runs they needed to secure the sweep and Wetherington would cap off the team’s stellar outing at-bat with a solo homer in the fifth.
