Braves Roll Over the Winston-Salem Rams

After splitting their last two doubleheaders with Peach Belt Conference opponents, the UNCP softball team swept the Rams of Winston Salem University in a nonconference matchup at the UNCP softball field. The Braves continued their recent streak of explosive offense at bat by capturing the first game 6-3 and the secured the sweep in game two with an 11-3 win.
“We can hit any pitching you throw at us right now. We’re having six, eight, 10 hits a game. I don’t have to worry about what they’re doing on defense or on the mound,” said Head Coach Brittany Bennett.
The Black and Gold used the right-handed pitching combo of Malerie Leviner and Jordan Hall to limit the potent scoring offensive attack of the Rams to just six runs on the day. They only gave up eight hits apiece and Leviner recorded a dozen strikeouts in game one.
“This is the highest scoring offense we’ve played against all year,” said Bennett. “We knew they were going to put the ball in play, and they did…I thought Malerie and J Hall [Jordan Hall] did a fantastic job.”
Game 1:
The home team got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when they scored a game-high four runs thanks to a pair of reaches on a throwing error and a fielder’s choice brought in Tatum Brummitt and Alyssa Price in for a pair of scores. Jordan Adcox single to shortstop and Mary Sells scored another run. Alex Watkins singled to center field and brought in Sells for the final run of the inning.
Game 2:
The Braves were the first to climb on the scoreboard again in game two in the bottom of the opening frame with a pair of runs but their most explosive innings came in the third and sixth. In the bottom of the third, the Braves built a 6-0 lead after Adcox singled to center field to bring Rendi Wetherington in for a score and Cam Davis’ homer cleared the center field fence for a pair of RBIs.
The Rams scored a trio of runs in the top of the sixth to bring the score to 6-3 but the Braves would respond with their highest scoring frame of the day that was capped off by a walk-off homer from Watkins that resulted in three RBIs to retire the game early after six innings.
